Hi,

I'm the creator of yt-subs, which you mention in the article.
Thanks for this post.

As you've worked with the site, what improvements would you suggest to make the process simpler? Either post here or send directly to me.

Thanks,
Barak

So do you stay up to midnight every upload night?

Wow, this is fascinating information. And from what I can tell, I think you must be right about the midnight PST time thing. It adds up to the fact that we had very little views on "day one" because technically it was only "live" for three hours.
We always posted our episodes at midnight EST on Thursdays (well, Wednesday night). I'd upload it in the evening of Wednesday night, on private-mode. Pre-embed videos for our site, like you.
As soon as the video is finished uploading, I'd then post on twitter/facebook asking audiences if they wanted to see it "early", if so give your YT username and I'll add you to the private list so they could view. This was great, because it was the diehard fans that asked to see it early, and then they'd be compelled to leave a very positive comment and like it. So when it went live for the rest of the world at 12:01EST, there'd already be 5-10 positive comments. And as many "likes".

This is brilliant, Scott. So many excellent points.

In fact, I agree and I'm glad our thinking aligns because as always, you prove you know more about everything than I do. I was never intending to stop rolling out slowly, only realigning my thinking about promotion. My title (Re-Thinking Roll-out) is wrong. It should be Re-Thinking Promotional Strategy which has no alliteration. I'm always ready to sacrifice accuracy for alliterative quality.

It's the fact that the material is there forever that was the epiphany for me. Your audience building period is... forever.

I know about the long tail, but I wasn't figuring it into the equation. I was killing myself to get everything done in six weeks.

But no, six weeks are my rollout. Promotion can be on-going. I don't have to get every viewer in the world to the show in the next six weeks.

Anyway, enough deep talk for a Saturday. I'm going to go watch an episode or two of Tights & Fights Ashes and then go join Jay Bushman's collaborative story telling project on Twitter The Talking Dead: http://thetalkingdead.tumblr.com/howto

But I can only do those two things because I have finally realized that I can spend the rest of my life building audience and I don't have to get it all done this weekend!

Ha!

Yeah, people seem to really enjoy the onion. I think that was Melanie Hunter's idea. It came out of the punch up room.
